What Mould Actually Smells Like

The smell is not the mould. It is a set of gases released as fungi digest whatever they are growing on, which is why you can smell growth you cannot see, in a room where none of it lives. Here is how to read the smell properly, and why the absence of one tells you almost nothing.

The short answer

  • The smell is not the mould itself. It is a mix of gases released as fungi digest the material they are growing on, which is why a room can smell strongly with nothing visible in it.
  • Gas moves through cavities, skirtings, vents and the gaps around power points. Growth stays where the moisture is, so the room you smell it in is frequently not the room it lives in.
  • Absence of smell is not reassurance. Most significant mould problems in a home have no noticeable odour, and dormant or dead growth still matters.
  • Nose blindness sets in within days. If a visitor mentions a smell you cannot detect, they are reading your house more accurately than you are.
  • Come home after a week away, walk in without opening a window, and pay attention to the first 30 seconds. That is the most honest reading of your own house you will get.

Mould does not really have a smell. What you are smelling is its exhaust: gases given off while it eats. That distinction sounds pedantic until you follow it through, because it means odour and growth are 2 different things, in 2 different places, behaving in 2 different ways.

What you are actually smelling

Fungi feed by breaking down the material they sit on. Plasterboard paper, timber, wallpaper paste, carpet backing, cotton, leather, the fine layer of skin cells and food residue that settles as household dust. As they digest, they release volatile compounds into the air. Those gases are what reaches your nose.

The mix changes depending on the species and, importantly, on what it is eating. The same organism on damp plasterboard and on damp timber will not smell identical. That is part of why descriptions vary so wildly: damp cardboard, old cellar, wet dog, mushrooms, sour dishcloth, second-hand bookshop. People are not imagining different smells. They are smelling different meals.

It also runs the other way. A damp smell does not automatically mean mould. Wet building materials off-gas on their own. Bacteria in a dried-out floor waste or a washing machine seal produce their own sour note. A subfloor that has taken on water will smell of wet earth well before anything fungal establishes. Smell is a prompt to go looking, not a diagnosis in either direction.

Gas travels. Mould does not.

This is the part that trips people up. Growth stays where the moisture is. The gases it produces do not. They move through wall cavities, under floors, out through the gaps around power points and light fittings, along skirtings and architraves, through the join between a vanity and the wall. Every time an exhaust fan or a ducted air conditioner runs, it shifts air pressure inside the house and pushes those gases somewhere new.

So the hallway smells and the hallway is fine. The growth is in a wall cavity 2 rooms away, or under the shower base, or in the subfloor beneath both. The short version: the source is very often somewhere you cannot see and would never think to sniff.

Treat the smell as a direction, not an address.

No smell is not good news

The most damaging idea in general circulation about mould is that a house without a musty smell is a house without a problem. Most significant mould problems in homes produce no noticeable odour at all.

There are several reasons for that. Some species are simply not strong producers. Growth sealed inside a cavity may have no air path into the living space, or may vent to the outside instead. Cooler, drier conditions slow the whole process down, so the same growth that reeks in February can go quiet in July and return with the humidity. Growth that has dried out and gone dormant releases very little while remaining perfectly capable of resuming, and its fragments and spores stay in the dust regardless.

Whether mould is alive is not the measure of whether it is a problem. Dead mould is still material you do not want distributed through the house. The nose cannot tell you any of this, which is why hidden growth generally shows itself in other ways first: staining that returns, paint lifting, a skirting that has softened, windows running with condensation on cool mornings.

Your nose gives up within days

Olfactory adaptation is the reason you stop noticing your own perfume by mid-morning. Faced with a constant background odour, the system stops reporting it, sometimes within hours, reliably within a few days. It is not damage and it is not a failing. It is the nose doing its job, which is to flag change rather than describe steady state.

The practical consequence is that you are the worst available judge of how your own house smells. Your visitors are considerably better, and the ones who love you are the least likely to say anything. If someone does mention it, however gently, take it as information rather than an insult. A person who says "it smells a bit damp in here" has given you something genuinely useful and has probably worked up to it.

Tradespeople and cleaners are useful for the same reason. We walk into a different house every few hours, so our baseline resets constantly.

The holiday test

The best diagnostic you have access to costs nothing and comes around every time you go away. When you come home after a week, your nose has fully reset, and you get roughly 30 seconds of accurate reading before it adapts again.

Use those seconds deliberately.

  • Do not open windows or doors on the way in, and do not carry the bags in first. Air the house out and you have thrown the test away.
  • Walk in, stop, and stand still in the entry for a moment before you do anything else.
  • Then go room to room, quickly, with the internal doors still shut. Push each door open and take the first breath of that room's air.
  • Open the enclosed spaces on the same pass: wardrobes, the linen cupboard, under the kitchen sink, the vanity, the laundry cabinet.
  • Write down what you noticed, and in which rooms, before you unpack. You will not remember it accurately by evening.

A smaller version works after a weekend away, or even after a full day out with the house closed up. Concentration builds while the house is shut and your nose has had a partial reset, so both factors work in your favour.

Musty, earthy, sour: what each might suggest

These are directional hints about where to look, not identification. Species cannot be determined by smell any more than by colour, and confirming what something is requires a laboratory. With that said, the character of an odour does tend to correlate with the situation producing it.

Musty, old books, damp cardboard

Usually slow, low-grade, long-running damp on cellulose materials: plasterboard paper, timber, stored paper and cardboard, natural fabrics. Think wardrobes on external walls, linen cupboards, boxes under beds, the back of a built-in, a bookshelf against a cool wall. Often there is no liquid water anywhere, just months of relative humidity sitting too high and air that never moves.

Earthy, soil, mushrooms

Tends to signal something wetter and more active, often closer to raw ground moisture or to timber that has been wet for a while. Subfloors, under a failing shower base, the cabinet beneath a slow-leaking tap, a wall that has been repeatedly wet and repeatedly dried. This is worth taking seriously and worth tracing properly.

Sour, sharp, dirty dishcloth

More often bacterial than fungal. Wet fabric left in the machine, a washing machine door seal, a floor waste that has dried out and lost its water trap, a dishwasher, a bin cavity. Frequently fixable in an afternoon with hot water, detergent and physical scrubbing, and worth eliminating first because it masks everything else.

Sweet or faintly chemical

Sometimes off-gassing from building materials, adhesives or underlay that have been wet, rather than from anything biological. Common after a flood event or a slab that has not fully dried. It fades. It also tells you that materials got wet, which is the useful part.

How to track a smell to its source

Systematic beats intuitive here, because intuition sends everyone to the bathroom first and the bathroom is often innocent.

  1. 1Close the house up for 3 or 4 hours before you start. You want concentration, not fresh air.
  2. 2Work room by room with the doors shut, and score each room 1 to 10 as you open it. Numbers force you to compare rather than guess.
  3. 3Go low. Floor level, the back of cupboards, under sinks, behind the toilet, along the skirting on external walls. Most sources sit low and most people sniff at head height.
  4. 4Open every enclosure: wardrobes, vanities, the pantry, appliance cavities, storage tubs, suitcases. Air in a closed box is far more informative than air in a room.
  5. 5Pull furniture away from external walls, particularly beds, wardrobes and lounges. The gap behind a bedhead on a shaded wall is among the most reliable places to check in a Brisbane house.
  6. 6Smell the air paths. The return air grille of a ducted system. The first 10 seconds after an exhaust fan starts. A subfloor vent. A range hood. These carry odour from places you cannot reach.
  7. 7Try the fabric test. Leave a clean cotton item in the suspect cupboard for a day, then take it to a different room and smell it there. Away from the background, a faint odour becomes obvious.
  8. 8Track the weather for 2 weeks. Worse after rain suggests water ingress or subfloor. Worse overnight and early morning suggests condensation. Worse when the air conditioner has been running suggests something in the duct path or a cavity being pressurised.

If the odour strengthens consistently around a particular spot, that is where a professional assessment should begin. Assessors work with moisture meters, thermal imaging and hygrometers, and sometimes with air or surface samples analysed by a laboratory. A good one builds a moisture story about the building before drawing any conclusion about fungi. It is worth understanding how that process works before you book, and handing over a documented 2-week pattern makes the work considerably faster.

What not to do with a smell

Do not cover it. Plug-in fresheners, scented sprays, oil diffusers and fragranced "mould" products remove your only early warning system while adding a further load of volatile compounds to indoor air you are already unhappy with. When the smell goes away and the moisture does not, you have made the problem quieter, not smaller. This is the main reason I work fragrance-free: a house should smell like nothing, and if it does not, I want to know why rather than paint over it.

Do not reach for bleach either. On non-porous surfaces it removes colour effectively, which reads as success. On porous materials the growth extends below the surface, so bleaching lightens the visible top and leaves the rest in place, and since household bleach is mostly water you have also added moisture to a damp material. Killing mould is the wrong goal in any case. Physical removal is the goal: cloth, detergent, correct brushes, honest effort, and on porous materials an approach that depends on how far the growth has gone and sometimes on taking the material out. And when something gets wet, dry it fast. Given the right conditions, growth can begin in around 48 hours. Hours matter. Days are not a window, they are a result.

Where I fit into this

What I do is clean surface mould where it is safe to do so as part of a clean, and during a Home Health Review walk the whole house and point out where moisture and mould risk is quietly building: the wardrobe with no airflow, the laundry that dries clothes indoors all winter, the window that runs every morning, the corner nobody has moved furniture away from in years. Housekeeping does not cause mould. Moisture does. But dust feeds it, clutter blocks airflow and hides the early signs, and a house that gets properly cleaned gets properly looked at.

If your house smells and you cannot find why, that is worth chasing down. If your house does not smell, that on its own tells you very little. Both are true at once, and holding both is most of the skill.

Common questions

Does mould always smell?

No. Most significant mould problems in a home produce no noticeable odour at all. Some species are weak producers of volatile compounds, growth sealed inside a wall or floor cavity may have no air path into living space, cooler and drier conditions slow the process, and dormant growth releases very little while remaining a problem. Absence of smell is not evidence that a home is clear.

Why can I smell mould but not find any?

Because the smell is a gas and the mould is not. The volatile compounds released as fungi digest a surface move through wall cavities, subfloors, ducting and the gaps around power points, skirtings and architraves, while the growth itself stays where the moisture is. It is common to smell an odour strongly in a room that is entirely clean, with the source in a cavity, under a floor or behind a fixture elsewhere in the house.

Can you tell what kind of mould it is from the smell?

No. Smell can hint at the situation, for example an earthy note pointing toward a wetter and more active source, or a sour note that turns out to be bacterial rather than fungal. It cannot identify a species. Neither can colour. Identifying what an organism actually is requires samples analysed in a laboratory.

How do I get rid of the mould smell?

By finding and removing the growth and correcting the moisture that allowed it, not by covering the odour. Fragranced sprays, plug-ins and diffusers remove your early warning signal and add further volatile compounds to indoor air. On non-porous surfaces, growth is removed physically with a cloth, detergent and effort. On porous materials the growth extends below the surface, so the right approach depends on the material and how far it has gone, and sometimes the material has to come out. If the source cannot be located, that is the point to bring in an independent assessor.

What does a musty smell actually mean?

It means something in the building is damp and being digested, so the useful response is to find the moisture rather than to treat the odour. Work out which room concentrates it, when it is worst, and whether it tracks with rain, overnight condensation or the air conditioner running. Health questions belong with a doctor. The building question belongs with whoever can find the water.
