The short answer
- House dust is mostly made inside the home: shed skin, textile fibre from bedding, carpet and clothing, soil walked in from outside, pet dander, and the dried debris of dust mites that feed on all of it.
- Dust mites depend on humidity rather than dirt. They do poorly below roughly 50 percent relative humidity, which makes moisture control the single biggest lever you have.

- Most of the accumulation sits in a small number of places: bedding, the mattress, carpet, upholstery, and the still air under and behind furniture where nothing disturbs it.
- HEPA vacuuming with slow overlapping passes, weekly hot-washed sheets, an aired bed and controlled humidity do more than any spray marketed for the purpose. You cannot eliminate dust mites, so the realistic goal is reduction and maintenance.
You cannot get rid of dust mites. That is the honest answer to the question most people are actually asking, and it is worth saying before anything else. What you can change is how much dust accumulates in a home, where it settles, and how much of it gets stirred back into the air every time someone walks across a room or turns on a fan. That is a maintenance problem rather than a fix you do once, and most of it comes down to humidity and technique instead of products.
What house dust actually is
Dust looks like a single substance. It is not. Empty a full canister from a vacuum used in an ordinary Brisbane house and you are looking at a mixed pile of material, most of which was either generated inside the home or walked in through the front door.
The rough composition is dead skin, textile fibre shed from clothing, bedding, towels, carpet and upholstery, soil and fine sand tracked in on shoes and paws, pet dander where there is a pet, paper fibre, food particles, and the faecal pellets and body fragments of house dust mites. Outdoor air adds pollen and combustion particles through open windows and gaps.
That last component matters more than its share of the volume suggests. House dust mite allergen is a recognised indoor allergen. What people encounter is not the mite itself, which is microscopic and stays buried in fabric, but the protein in the material it leaves behind. That material dries, breaks up, and becomes part of the general dust load in a room.
Most of the dust in your house was made by your house. That is either reassuring or unsettling, depending on your temperament.
Dust is also not evenly distributed, which is the practical point. It concentrates where air moves slowly and where fabric holds it. Dust mites live on humidity, not dirt
This is the part most people have backwards. Dust mites are not primarily a hygiene problem in the way that word usually gets used. They do not drink. They absorb moisture directly from the air through their bodies, which makes the relative humidity of a room the biggest single factor in whether a population thrives or struggles.
Below roughly 50 percent relative humidity they do poorly. In the 60s and 70s, conditions suit them well. Food is never the limiting factor, because every occupied home produces a continuous supply of shed skin and fibre. Moisture is the limiting factor.
Which is inconvenient in Brisbane. A subtropical summer runs long stretches above 60 percent, and through a wet January or February the indoor reading can sit there for weeks. Northside homes with good tree cover, deep verandahs and limited afternoon sun hold it longer again.
There is a second wrinkle worth knowing. The reading on a hygrometer sitting on your bedside table is the room. The microclimate inside a mattress, deep in carpet pile, or inside a cushion is not the room. A sleeping body puts a meaningful amount of moisture into a bed over 7 or 8 hours, and a mattress does not dry as fast as the air above it. The moisture that feeds mites also feeds mould
That is 2 problems and 1 lever. Healthy indoor relative humidity sits at roughly 40 to 65 percent. Below 40 and a home feels dry, static and uncomfortable. Sustained above 65 and you are creating good conditions for both mould growth and dust mite populations at the same time.
Mould gives you faster feedback. Given the right conditions it can begin growing in around 48 hours, which is why a wardrobe that was fine on Friday can smell wrong by Monday after a wet weekend with the house shut up. Mites are slower and quieter, but they respond to the same conditions.
The practical move is to stop guessing. A basic hygrometer is inexpensive and it is a measuring instrument, not a treatment. Put one in the main bedroom and one wherever the air feels heaviest, then watch what the number does across a week. Most people are surprised, usually by the bedroom overnight and by the laundry. If the number is consistently high, the fix is ventilation, extraction that actually vents outside, and sometimes a dehumidifier in a specific room. Where the allergen actually accumulates
Start with the bed. It is warm, it is humid, it holds fabric in layers, and it receives shed skin for hours every night. Bedding, pillows and the mattress are the primary reservoir in almost every home, which is why the bedroom is where effort pays best.
After that, in rough order:
- Carpet, particularly bedroom carpet, which combines a fibre reservoir with a room that generates a lot of skin and fibre.
- Upholstered furniture, especially anything with a loose-weave fabric or deep cushions.
- Curtains, cushions, throws, floor rugs layered over carpet, and soft toys kept in the bed.
- Still air zones: under the bed, behind the bedhead, behind and under the couch, on top of the wardrobe, along skirtings, the gap beside the fridge, the tops of door frames.
- Ceiling fan blades, air conditioner filters and return vents, all of which hold a load and then broadcast it the moment they run.
That last group is the one standard cleaning tends to skip, because it is uncomfortable to reach and nobody sees it. Dust that lands where nothing disturbs it simply stays. Then someone opens a door, a fan starts, or a vacuum with poor filtration runs past, and a reservoir that took months to build gets redistributed across the room in seconds. What genuinely reduces what accumulates
Short list. Most of it is unglamorous and none of it requires a specialty product.
HEPA vacuuming, done with technique
The filter is the first half. HEPA filtration captures fine particulate that lesser filtration passes straight back into the room, which is the difference between removing dust and relocating it. The seal on the vacuum body matters as much as the filter itself, because air that escapes around a filter has not been filtered.
The technique is the second half, and it is the half people skip. Slow, overlapping passes. Roughly 3 or 4 passes over bedroom carpet and high-traffic areas rather than 1 fast sweep down the middle of the room. Crevice tool along skirtings and carpet edges, where the heaviest concentration usually sits. Under the bed, not around it. Move the chair rather than steering past it.

Hot-wash the sheets weekly
Weekly, and hot. Temperature does the work here, on both the mite population and the accumulated material in the fabric. Pillowcases most of all, because that is where a face spends the night.
Mattress protectors, blankets, quilt covers and throws sit on a longer rotation, but they should be on a rotation rather than being washed when someone finally thinks of it. Soft toys that live in the bed go through the same cycle as bedding, or they live somewhere other than the bed. More detail in bedding and soft furnishings.
Air the bed instead of making it immediately
Fold the blankets back and leave the bed open for an hour or so in the morning. It costs nothing and it lets the moisture a sleeping body has put into the mattress and bedding actually leave, instead of being sealed under a made bed for the day.
It is a small thing that works because it targets the limiting factor. If you only adopt 1 habit from this article, this is the one with the best effort-to-effect ratio.
Hold humidity between 40 and 65 percent
Run bathroom and kitchen extraction fans for a good stretch after use, and check they vent outside rather than into the roof cavity. Open windows on dry days and keep them shut on the muggy ones, which is the opposite of what most people do by instinct. Do not dry washing indoors without ventilation. Use a dehumidifier in the specific room that needs it rather than hoping 1 unit fixes a whole house.
Reduce the number of soft surfaces
Every soft surface is somewhere dust settles into rather than onto, and fabric is harder to clean thoroughly than a hard surface. Fewer decorative cushions. Fewer rugs layered over carpet. Fewer soft toys in the bed. Fewer open shelves crowded with ornaments that need individual handling.
This is not an instruction to strip your house back to a rental inspection. It is a suggestion to notice which items you actually use and which ones exist mainly to be dusted around.
Keep the mattress low-moisture
We do not wet-clean or steam mattresses, and we will not be talked into it. Adding moisture to a thick fabric object that cannot dry quickly in a humid climate risks creating a considerably worse problem inside something you sleep on every night. The approach that makes sense here is HEPA vacuuming the mattress surface and seams whenever the sheets come off, hot-washing the bedding, airing the bed, and controlling the humidity of the room. Damp-wipe hard surfaces, properly
A damp microfibre cloth picks dust up and holds it. A dry cloth or a feather duster largely launches it into the air to land somewhere else. So damp is right, and it does help.
The limit is what most people mean by it. Wiping the visible front of a shelf while the rest of the shelf, the objects on it and the wall behind stay untouched is not dusting, it is tidying the sightline. Things come off the shelf, the shelf gets wiped end to end, the things get wiped, the things go back.
What does not do much
Some of the following genuinely helps a little, and where it does, we will say so and then state where it stops. The rest is marketing.
- Fragranced sprays and air fresheners. These add volatile compounds to a room and remove nothing. Fragrance is also a common household trigger, which is the reason we do not use it at all.
- "Anti-allergen" and "allergen neutralising" sprays. The claims sit in a poorly regulated space, and even taken at face value, a surface treatment does not address material sitting inside a mattress or deep in carpet pile. Physical removal beats chemical treatment here.
- Feather dusters and dry cloths on hard surfaces. Efficient at redistribution, poor at removal.
- Foggers and room bombs. They put chemistry into the air of a home and leave the reservoirs in the fabric exactly where they were.
- Damp-dusting theatre. A single fast wipe across the visible front edge of every surface in a house looks like a clean and leaves the actual accumulation in place.
There are 2 things that deserve a fairer hearing than a flat dismissal.
Air purifiers do work on what they are designed for. A HEPA unit sized correctly for the room will capture fine airborne particulate, and in a bedroom that is a reasonable thing to have. The limit is that dust mite allergen is comparatively heavy, becomes airborne when disturbed, and settles again fairly quickly, so the great majority of it is in fabric rather than in the air at any given moment. A purifier is a useful supplement to removal, not a substitute for it. That trade-off is unpacked in do air purifiers actually work.
Pulling up carpet also does something real. It removes a large fibre reservoir, and in a bedroom that is a genuine reduction. The trade-off is that hard floors let settled dust become airborne more readily when disturbed, so they need frequent and correct cleaning to stay ahead. It is a change of problem rather than a removal of one, which is the honest version of the argument in carpet versus hard floors.
The honest answer to "how do I get rid of dust mites"
You do not. Not in an occupied home, not in a subtropical climate, and not with any product currently on a shelf. Dust mites are present in essentially every home that contains bedding and soft furnishings, and they will be present in yours after you have done everything in this article correctly.
Anyone who tells you they can eliminate them from your home is either using the word loosely or selling something.
What is achievable is reduction. Less material accumulated in the reservoirs. Less of it disturbed and thrown back into the air. Conditions that are less favourable to the population growing. That is a maintenance outcome, held by a routine, rather than an event you book once and tick off. A routine that actually holds
Frequency beats intensity, right up until the backlog is large enough that intensity is the only way to reset it. A workable rhythm for most homes looks roughly like this.
- 1Weekly: hot-wash sheets and pillowcases, HEPA vacuum bedroom carpet slowly including under the bed, damp-wipe hard surfaces properly, check the humidity reading, run extraction fans after every shower.
- 2Fortnightly: vacuum upholstery and rugs with the appropriate tool, move the furniture that normally does not move, do the skirtings and carpet edges with the crevice tool.
- 3Monthly: HEPA vacuum the mattress surface and seams at a sheet change, wardrobe tops, behind bedheads, ceiling fan blades, air conditioner filters, door frames.
- 4Seasonally: curtains and blinds, vents and light fittings, blanket and quilt wash, and a proper look at the wet-season humidity situation before it becomes a mould conversation.
If that list looks long, note that the weekly tier carries most of the load and takes an ordinary amount of time. The rest is rotation. Where a cleaner fits, and where one does not
Most of what is above, you can do yourself. We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. If you have the time and you are willing to be slow about the vacuuming, you will get most of the way there without paying anyone.
Where we earn our keep is the accumulated backlog and the physically hard parts: the years of build-up behind and under furniture that has not moved, the tracks and seals, the vents, the cornices, the tops of things nobody can reach comfortably.
