Do Air Purifiers Actually Work?

I do not sell air purifiers and I have no arrangement with anyone who does, so here is the unexcited version. A good HEPA unit does 1 job well, and most of what people buy one for is not that job.

The short answer

  • A HEPA purifier captures fine particulate that is airborne and passing through the machine. Both of those conditions matter, and neither applies to the dust already sitting in your carpet.
  • Dust mite allergen rides on comparatively heavy particles that settle within minutes rather than hanging in the air for hours, so a purifier is the wrong tool for it. Vacuuming, hot washing and humidity control remove far more of what accumulates in a home.
  • Room size and air changes per hour decide whether a unit does anything measurable. A machine rated for a 20 square metre room in a 40 square metre living area is furniture.
  • Filters are a running cost people forget at the counter. A cheap unit with expensive proprietary filters is not a cheap unit.
  • Avoid anything that deliberately generates ozone in an occupied room. Ozone is a recognised respiratory irritant, and ionisers drop particles onto your surfaces rather than removing them from the house.

Air purifier is the biggest search term in this entire subject, which tells you how much money sits behind it. I do not sell purifiers, I do not recommend a brand, and I have no affiliate arrangement with anyone who does. So this is the honest version. A good HEPA purifier does 1 thing genuinely well, and a great deal of what people buy one for is not that thing.

What a HEPA purifier actually does

It draws room air through a filter and pushes it back out with less fine particulate in it. True HEPA media captures at least 99.95 percent of particles at the size that is hardest to catch, around 0.3 microns, and performs better on either side of that size. Smoke, cooking particulate, pollen, pet dander, the fine end of house dust: if it is floating and it passes through the machine, it gets caught.

2 words in that sentence do all the heavy lifting. Floating. And passes. A purifier can only clean the air that physically travels through it, and it can only capture what happens to be in the air at the time.

What it cannot do

It does nothing for what has already settled. The dust in the carpet pile, the accumulation in a mattress, the fine grit along a skirting board, the fibre and skin cell mix packed into a sofa. If you want a sense of the volume involved, what house dust is actually made of covers it. A purifier will never touch any of that.

It does nothing about the source either. The cat still sheds. Shoes still carry road grime and pollen in from the front path. A window open on a windy Brisbane afternoon loads a room faster than a small unit can clear it. The machine filters an outcome. It does not address a cause.

And it does nothing about moisture. A purifier may catch some airborne spores, but mould growing on a wall is a water problem, and filtering the air does not dry a wall or slow growth. If humidity is the real issue in your home, a purifier is not the appliance you want. Whether a dehumidifier is worth it in this climate is the more useful question.

Gases and odours are a different filter again. That needs activated carbon, and the thin carbon pads bundled with most consumer units saturate quickly. Real carbon capacity means real weight of carbon, which most household machines do not carry.

Dust mite allergen is the wrong job for a purifier

This is where a lot of purchases go sideways. House dust mite allergen is carried on relatively heavy particles. Disturb a mattress, a rug or a cushion and it lifts, then it comes back down within minutes rather than lingering for hours the way fine smoke does. It spends almost its entire life in the fibre, not in the air.

A purifier can only clean air that reaches it, and allergen sitting inside a mattress never will. That is why the work on this particular problem is mechanical: HEPA vacuuming the reservoirs, hot washing bedding weekly, and keeping the room dry enough that mites do poorly, which is roughly below 50 percent relative humidity. The only 2 specs worth reading

Room size and air changes per hour. Most of the rest of the box is decoration.

Work out the volume of the room: floor area multiplied by ceiling height. A bedroom of 4 metres by 4 metres with a 2.7 metre ceiling is about 43 cubic metres. A common rule of thumb is 4 to 5 air changes per hour in the room that matters most, so that bedroom wants somewhere near 215 cubic metres of clean air delivered every hour. Compare that against the unit's clean air delivery rate. If the number falls a long way short, the machine will never keep up with the room you bought it for.

Then read the noise figure. Rated performance is almost always measured at maximum fan speed, and maximum fan speed on most units is not something you will sleep beside. People buy on the top-speed number, then run the thing on low all night and get a fraction of the rated output. If the manufacturer publishes performance at each speed, read the one you will actually use.

Purifiers work in rooms, not houses. A closed door turns a room into a volume a unit can genuinely turn over. An open plan living area running into a hallway and a staircase does not. And do not wedge it behind the sofa. It needs clear air in and clear air out.

The running cost nobody mentions in the shop

Filters are consumable. Main HEPA elements typically want replacing somewhere between 6 and 12 months depending on the unit and how dirty the incoming air is, and pre-filters and carbon stages need attention more often than that. Over a few years the filters can add up to a meaningful share of what the machine cost in the first place. Check the replacement price before you buy, not after.

A clogged filter is the quiet failure mode. Airflow drops, the machine still hums away sounding busy, and it is moving far less air than it was. Wash the pre-filter if the manufacturer says it is washable. Never wash a HEPA element unless it is explicitly designed for it, because wetting the media ruins it and you will not be able to tell by looking.

Ionisers, ozone and the rest

Ionisers charge particles so they clump together and fall out of the air. That does technically clear the air. It also deposits everything onto your floor, your bedding and your furniture, where it still has to be cleaned up, and some ionisers produce ozone as a by-product. Moving material from the air to the surfaces is not the same as removing it from the house.

Anything marketed as an ozone generator, activated oxygen or a shock treatment for an occupied space is a poor idea indoors. Ozone is a recognised respiratory irritant. At concentrations low enough to be sensible to breathe, it is not doing much to contaminants either, so you get the irritant without the benefit. Give those devices a wide berth.

UV lamps built into purifiers attract heavy marketing. The contact time between passing air and the lamp is extremely short, and I would treat any germ-killing claim as advertising unless there is independent testing behind it. As for photocatalytic and plasma technologies, I am not across the evidence in enough detail to recommend them either way, and some have been reported to generate by-products of their own. When I do not know, I say so.

Where a purifier genuinely earns its place

There are real situations where I would buy one without hesitation, and they share a pattern: fine airborne particulate arriving from a source you cannot remove.

  • Bushfire smoke, hazard reduction burns and smoky winter air. This is precisely the particle size HEPA is built for, and it keeps arriving whether you like it or not.
  • A house on a busy road, where traffic particulate is a constant background load.
  • A closed bedroom in a household managing sensitivities, running while the room is occupied, as a supplement to the cleaning rather than a substitute for it.
  • Homes with indoor pets, where dander is continuously topped up no matter how well you vacuum.
  • During and after renovation work, though sealing off the area and cleaning properly does more than any filter.

The honest test is short. If you can remove the source, remove the source. If you genuinely cannot, filter what it produces.

The order I would actually work in

  1. 1Find the source and deal with it. Damp, an unsealed subfloor, a pet sleeping on the bed, shoes coming inside, a bathroom fan venting into the roof cavity.
  2. 2Control humidity. Roughly 40 to 65 percent relative humidity is the range you want, which restrains both mould and dust mites at once. A cheap hygrometer in the bedroom tells you more than most appliances will.
  3. 3Clean the reservoirs properly. HEPA vacuum the mattress when you change the sheets, hot wash bedding weekly, fold the blankets back so the bed airs, and vacuum carpet and soft furnishings with equipment that retains what it picks up instead of returning the fine fraction to the room.
  4. 4Then, if a single room still has a particulate problem you cannot solve at the source, buy a purifier and size it for that room.

Most of the value sits in the first 3 steps, which is inconvenient, because they involve effort rather than a purchase. That is the work we do on an allergy-friendly clean: the right vacuum, the right brush for the surface, fragrance-free products, and attention to the places dust actually collects.

A purifier filters the consequence. Nearly all of the win is upstream of it.

Common questions

Do air purifiers help with household dust?

They capture the fine airborne fraction while it is passing through the unit, which is worth something. What they cannot do is touch dust that has already settled into carpet, bedding, mattresses and soft furnishings, and that is where most of the dust in a home lives. Vacuuming with proper filtration and washing bedding removes far more of it than any purifier will.

What size air purifier do I need for a bedroom?

Multiply the floor area by the ceiling height to get the room volume in cubic metres, then multiply that by 4 or 5 to get the clean air delivery rate you want per hour. Compare that figure with the unit's rated clean air delivery rate, and remember the rating is usually measured at maximum fan speed, which is often louder than you will tolerate overnight. Buy for the room you will actually close the door on rather than for the whole house.

Will an air purifier get rid of dust mites?

No. Dust mite allergen sits on relatively heavy particles that settle out of the air within minutes and spend almost all their time in fibre rather than airborne, so a purifier rarely encounters it. What reduces how much accumulates in a home is HEPA vacuuming the mattress and carpet, hot washing bedding weekly, and keeping indoor humidity down, since mites do poorly below roughly 50 percent relative humidity.

Are ionisers and ozone generators worth buying?

Ozone-generating devices should not be run in an occupied room. Ozone is a recognised respiratory irritant, and at levels low enough to be sensible to breathe it is not doing much to contaminants either. Ionisers work by making particles clump and fall onto surfaces, which clears the air but leaves the material on your floor and furniture to be cleaned up, and some ionisers produce ozone as a by-product.

Can an air purifier fix a mould problem?

No. Mould is a moisture problem, and filtering air does not dry a wall or stop growth. A purifier may capture some airborne spores, but the actual fix is finding the water source, improving ventilation and keeping relative humidity in the 40 to 65 percent range. Mould can begin growing in around 48 hours given the right conditions, so the moisture is always the thing to chase first.
