The short answer
- House dust is a mixture, not a single substance: textile fibres, soil and pollen tracked in from outside, skin, pet dander, insect fragments including dust mite waste, and fine particulate from cooking and outdoor air.
- The popular line that dust is mostly dead skin is overstated. In most homes, fibres from clothing and soft furnishings plus soil walked in on shoes and feet do more of the work.
- Settled dust is a food source. It is the organic fraction that lets dust mites persist, and dust plus moisture is what lets mould colonise surfaces that are otherwise inert.
- Dust concentrates where air is still and where fibres live: under beds, behind furniture, along skirtings, in carpet pile, mattresses and upholstery.
- Removal beats redistribution. HEPA-filtered vacuuming, damp microfibre instead of dry flicking, and washing the textiles is what actually takes dust out of a house.
Dust is the one cleaning job that never finishes, which is probably why most people stop thinking about what it actually is. It is worth thinking about. The composition tells you where it came from, why some rooms are worse than others, and why the way most of us were taught to dust barely works.
The mix, roughly in order of how much of it there tends to be
Every home produces its own blend, but the ingredient list is fairly consistent.
Textile fibres
Cotton, wool, polyester, and whatever your carpet, lounge, curtains, doonas and clothes are made of. Fabric sheds constantly, in ordinary use, just from being sat on, walked over and pulled out of a drawer. In a home with carpet, heavy curtains and a fabric lounge, fibre is usually the single biggest visible contributor. Under a lamp you can see it: those pale, slightly fluffy strands that make dust look like lint, because a fair amount of it is lint.
Soil and outdoor particulate
Tracked in on shoes, socks, bare feet, pet paws and the bottoms of bags, and blown in through open windows and doors. Brisbane homes get a lot of this. We open the house up, we have gardens close to the back door, and a good part of what lands on the coffee table started life in the yard. Add pollen in season, plus the fine soot and brake dust that comes off a busy road, and outdoor material can dominate the dust in a front room.
Skin
Yes, it is in there. No, it is not most of it. The often-repeated claim that household dust is mostly dead skin does not survive contact with the research: when analysts break settled dust down, skin turns out to be a real but modest component, well behind fibre and tracked-in soil in most homes. The myth has stuck around because it is memorable and slightly revolting. Sceptical is the right posture on anything that sounds like a fun fact.
Pet dander and hair
Dander is skin flakes shed by animals, and it is light, sticky and small enough to stay airborne for a long time. Hair is the obvious part. Dander is the part that ends up on vertical surfaces and deep inside fabric. Homes with a dog or cat have a noticeably different dust profile from homes without one, and it does not disappear if the animal is kept outside, because it travels on clothing.
Insect fragments, including dust mite waste
Household dust contains pieces of insects: fragments of bodies, shed casings and droppings. House dust mite allergen, one of the recognised indoor allergens, comes largely from mite faecal pellets and body fragments that end up in bedding, mattresses, carpet and upholstery. Cooking and combustion particulate
Frying, toasting, candles, incense and a gas cooktop all release very fine particles. Some of it settles as a slightly greasy film, particularly in the kitchen and the rooms next to it, which is why kitchen dust behaves differently. It sticks, it grabs onto other dust, and it does not lift off with a dry cloth.
Why the mix differs from house to house, and room to room
Composition follows behaviour and building fabric. A shoes-off home with hard floors, no pets and a well-sealed envelope produces less dust and a different kind of it. A pre-war Queenslander with gappy floorboards, a subfloor underneath, wool rugs and a dog produces considerably more, and more of it is soil and fibre.
Room by room it splits further:
- Bedrooms skew towards fibre, skin and mite allergen, because that is where the textiles are and where a person lies still for 8 hours a night.
- Living rooms accumulate a bit of everything, with more tracked-in soil near the entry and more fibre near the lounge.
- Kitchens carry the greasy fraction, which is why the top of the fridge and the range hood surround feel tacky rather than powdery.
- Studies and home offices are quietly bad: still air, warm equipment pulling air through it, and furniture that never moves.
- Bathrooms produce less classic dust and more of a moisture problem, which is a different job entirely.
Rooms with the door usually shut and the windows rarely opened are not cleaner. They are undisturbed, so what settles stays put.
Dust is not inert, and that is the part people miss
Untidy is the least of it. Settled dust is organic material, and organic material is food.
Dust mites feed on the organic fraction of house dust, skin and fungal material included. They also depend on humidity, doing poorly below roughly 50 percent relative humidity, which is why moisture control matters at least as much as vacuuming does. Mould works on the same principle from a different angle. A tile, a windowsill or a painted wall offers almost nothing for mould to eat. Coat that surface in fine dust, add condensation or a damp patch that cannot dry, and it now has both food and water. Mould can begin growing in around 48 hours when conditions suit it.
So dust is the connecting layer between 2 problems people usually treat separately. Keeping surfaces genuinely clean and keeping indoor relative humidity in the sensible band of roughly 40 to 65 percent does double duty, because it works on both at once.

Where it concentrates, and why
Dust follows air. Where air moves, particles stay suspended and eventually land somewhere else. Where air is still, they settle and build. That gives you a fairly predictable map.
- Under beds and behind bedheads: still air, right next to the largest textile reservoir in the house, and awkward to reach.
- Behind and under furniture that never moves, including the lounge, bookshelves and the fridge.
- Along skirting boards and in the join where floor meets wall, where airflow drops off.
- Inside carpet pile and rugs, which act as a deep filter holding everything until it is disturbed.
- Mattresses, pillows, doonas, cushions and upholstered furniture.
- High horizontal surfaces: ceiling fan blades, tops of door frames, light fittings, cornices, picture rails and wardrobe tops.
- Air-conditioner filters and return vents, which concentrate whatever the system pulls through them.
Ceiling fans deserve a specific mention in Queensland. A blade collects a thick fibrous ridge along its leading edge over a season, and the first hot night you switch it on, a good part of that goes into the room and then onto the bed underneath. We rotate that kind of higher-detail work across visits rather than doing it every time, alongside light fittings, vents, blinds and interior windows. It does not need doing weekly. It very much needs doing.

What that means for how you actually clean
If dust is mostly fibre, soil and fine particulate sitting in textiles and still corners, the goal is removal rather than rearrangement. Most conventional dusting rearranges.
A feather duster and a dry cloth lift fine particles into the air, where they hang for a while and then land again, often on the surface you have just finished. It looks like progress for about 20 minutes. Damp microfibre traps and holds instead, and then you rinse it out of the house entirely.
Vacuuming carries the same trap in a more consequential form. A vacuum that picks up the visible debris but pushes the fine fraction back out through the exhaust has moved dust from the floor into the air you are standing in. Sealed HEPA filtration is the difference, and it is worth understanding what a HEPA filter is actually doing rather than treating the label as a guarantee. Slow passes matter too. Carpet pile only gives up what it holds when the head has time to work.
The rest is unglamorous and effective:
- 1Wash the textiles. Sheets weekly on a hot wash, then pillow protectors, throws and cushion covers on a rotation.
- 2HEPA vacuum the mattress when you change the sheets, and fold the blankets back so the bed airs instead of making it straight away. Skip wet-cleaning and steaming a mattress: added moisture that cannot dry quickly risks a worse problem than the one you started with.
- 3Vacuum before you wet-mop, always. Mopping over loose dust makes a slurry and pushes it into grout and edges.
- 4Work top down. Fans and high surfaces first, floors last, or you will do the floors twice.
- 5Move things. The dust behind the bedside table is not going to walk out on its own.
- 6Keep humidity in range and shoes at the door. Both reduce what arrives and what survives.
None of this needs harsh chemistry. Dust is a physical problem, and it responds to the right tool, the right cloth and actual effort. The honest limits
You cannot eliminate house dust, and it is worth being wary of anything sold on that promise. Fabric sheds, skin sheds, the outdoors comes inside on your feet, and a home that is lived in will always generate it.
What you can change is how much accumulates, how much stays locked in the reservoirs rather than circulating in the air, and how often the deep material gets removed instead of stirred. Done consistently, that helps reduce common household triggers and supports a healthier home environment. It is a maintenance question, not a one-off one. If a home has been coasting for a while, the reservoirs are usually well past what a normal clean will shift, and it takes a full reset before regular maintenance makes much difference. Holding it there afterwards is far less work than getting it there.

Controlling dust and indoor humidity together is more effective than treating either alone.
Is a damp cloth better than a dry duster?
For most surfaces, yes. A dry cloth or feather duster tends to lift fine particles into the air, where they resettle nearby. Damp microfibre traps and holds the particles so they can be rinsed away. The exception is anything that should not get wet, such as some electronics, certain timber finishes and light fittings, where a barely damp pass followed by a dry one, or a vacuum with a brush attachment, is safer.
How often should high surfaces like ceiling fans be cleaned?
Not every clean, but not never either. Ceiling fans, light fittings, cornices, vents and blinds build up gradually and are best rotated across regular visits so each one gets proper attention a few times a year.
