Does Vinegar Kill Mould? (And Why That Is the Wrong Question)

Vinegar kills some mould on some surfaces. That is far less useful than people expect, because dead mould still matters and killing was never the job. What removal actually involves, and where no liquid reaches.

The short answer

  • Vinegar kills some mould on some hard surfaces, and there is no way to tell by looking whether it killed the patch in front of you.
  • Dead mould and dormant spores still count. Alive or dead is not the measure of whether you have a problem. Present or removed is.
  • On non-porous surfaces a cloth, a detergent and genuine physical effort does the same job, and the effort was doing most of the work all along.
  • On porous materials like plasterboard, grout and carpet underlay, growth extends below the surface, so wiping the face removes the visible part and leaves the rest.
  • Bleach is the worse option: it strips colour while leaving growth in the material, and household bleach is mostly water, so it adds moisture to the exact spot you are trying to dry.
  • Drying a spill, a leak or a wet carpet within hours rather than days does more than any product in a bottle, because growth can begin in around 48 hours.

The short answer is sometimes, partly, on some surfaces, and you will never know which. The longer answer is that I would rather talk you out of the question than answer it, because killing mould is not the job. Getting it off the surface is.

Sterilised is not the same as gone

Picture a patch of growth on a bathroom wall. You spray it with something. Assume the best case: everything living in that patch dies on contact. What is left on the wall? The same layer of fungal material, in the same place, now dead.

That layer is still there when you brush past it. It still fragments and becomes airborne when it is disturbed. And spores that were dormant rather than actively growing are unaffected by a great deal of what people spray at them, because dormancy is the survival strategy. Dormant spores are waiting for water, not for permission.

So the useful test is not whether it died. It is whether it is still on the wall. This is also why the underlying issue is never the surface itself. What vinegar is actually doing on a hard surface

White vinegar is a mild acid. On glass, tiles, a shower screen or a sealed benchtop it softens and lifts a surface film, and it is known to kill a range of common household moulds. Fine so far.

Here is the part that gets skipped. Someone sprays vinegar on a mark, scrubs it for 40 seconds, watches it disappear, and the vinegar gets the credit. The cloth did the work. Detergent carries surfactants, molecules designed to lift soil off a surface and hold it in the cloth so it leaves the room with you. Vinegar has no surfactant. It is an acid with a smell.

On a hard, non-porous, acid-tolerant surface, vinegar is a reasonable thing to use and I am not going to be precious about it. It is cheap and it is low-tox. Just be honest about what earned the result. For the wider picture of where vinegar helps and where it quietly damages your benchtops, that is the general vinegar article. This one is only about mould.

Porous surfaces: where wiping stops working

Plasterboard. Unsealed or waxed timber. Grout. Carpet and underlay. Insulation. Fabric. Silicone that has gone past its useful life.

Mould is not a stain sitting on top of these materials. It grows into them. What you can see is the fruiting portion of something with a network extending below the surface, so a wipe removes the visible part and leaves the rest undisturbed. It returns in the same footprint, which is the clue people usually misread as "the vinegar did not work". The vinegar worked exactly as well as it was ever going to.

What happens next depends on the material and how far it has gone. A small patch of surface growth on sealed, sound grout can sometimes be worked back mechanically. Water-damaged plasterboard, saturated underlay or perished silicone is a removal-and-replace conversation, not a cleaning one. Nobody enjoys hearing that, and it is still true.

Why bleach is the worse choice

Bleach is what most people reach for when the vinegar disappoints them, and it makes the situation harder to read rather than better.

Bleach removes colour. On a porous surface it strips the pigment out of the growth while leaving the growth itself in the material. The patch goes pale, which reads as a win, so you stop looking at it. It darkens again in a few weeks and you assume it is new.

Household bleach is also mostly water. You have just applied water to a material that has a mould problem because it is already holding water. That is the opposite of the intervention required. Add the fumes in a small bathroom with poor ventilation, and there is no version of this where bleach is the right tool.

Colour is not information

While we are here: the colour of what you are looking at tells you close to nothing. The same species presents in different colours on different surfaces in the same room, depending on what it is growing on and how wet it is. Some moulds are effectively transparent and sit on a white wall looking like nothing at all.

"Black mould" is a colour. It is not a species and it is not a diagnosis, and identifying what is actually growing requires a laboratory. So the question "does vinegar kill black mould" cannot be answered, not because it is a bad question, but because nobody in the conversation knows what they are dealing with yet.

What removal actually looks like

This is the part that does not sell products, which is presumably why it gets less airtime. On a suitable non-porous surface, the sequence I use is:

  1. 1Vacuum the area first with a HEPA-filtered machine, gently, before anything is disturbed. Dry-brushing a patch of growth into the air of a small room is a bad opening move.
  2. 2Work with a cloth and a detergent solution, in small sections, with real pressure. Physical removal is the mechanism. There is no chemistry that substitutes for it.
  3. 3Change cloths often and fold to a clean face regularly, so you are removing material rather than redistributing it across the wall.
  4. 4Where the surface can take it, step up the abrasion: the correct brush for the profile, citric acid on mineral build-up, steel wool on surfaces that tolerate it. Match the tool to the material, not to the frustration.
  5. 5Dry the area properly afterwards and keep it dry. If it is still damp in a week, none of the above mattered.

That is the whole method. Fragrance-free products, no bleach, no essential oils (an essential oil is still a fragrance, and fragrance-free means fragrance-free), and a lot of physical effort. Cleaning is a manual trade dressed up as a chemical one.

A note on scope. We do not identify species, and nothing here is a diagnosis of what is growing in a particular home: that requires laboratory analysis. We are not remediators. Full remediation is specialist work, and we will say so when a home needs it rather than sell a clean that will not hold.

The thing the bottle was never going to fix

Mould needs moisture, something to eat and time. You cannot remove any of the 3, but you can influence all of them.

Moisture is the big one, and most of it is generated inside the house rather than blown in from outside. Showering, cooking, drying laundry on an airer in the lounge room and simply breathing all add water to indoor air. Given the right conditions, mould can begin growing in around 48 hours, which is why drying a spill, a leak or a wet carpet within hours rather than days is the single most useful thing anyone reading this can do. A healthy home sits at roughly 40 to 65 percent relative humidity and dries out fast after a water event.

Food and time are where housekeeping earns its place, and I want to be precise about this because it gets overstated in both directions. Dust and organic film are food. Clutter and crowded furniture block airflow, which slows drying and creates the still, damp pockets where growth starts. Both also hide the early signs, so a problem gets found late instead of early. Cleaning does not fix water. It does remove the food source, shorten drying time and keep the damp-prone spots visible, and those are real contributions rather than consolation prizes.

When it has stopped being a wiping job

Put the bottle down and get a professional opinion if any of these apply: the area is larger than a small patch or spans more than 1 room, it returns to the same place after cleaning, it is on or behind porous material, there is any history of water damage even an old one, or it followed a flood, a burst pipe or a roof failure.

Two things are worth knowing before you decide you are fine. Significant mould does not have to be visible or smell like anything, and most people go nose blind to a musty room within a few days, so the absence of a smell is not reassurance. And this is not an old-house problem. New builds have their own failure modes, including condensation inside steel-framed wall cavities where nothing shows on the surface until it is well advanced.

Does vinegar kill mould?

On some hard surfaces, yes, at least partly. White vinegar is a mild acid and it is known to kill a range of common household moulds. The problem is that killing mould was never the useful goal. Dead mould and dormant spores are still present on the surface, still able to become airborne when disturbed, and still a problem. Physical removal is what counts, and on a non-porous surface a cloth with a detergent and genuine effort achieves that just as well.

Is vinegar or bleach better for mould?

Vinegar, but only because bleach is a genuinely poor choice rather than because vinegar is a good one. Bleach removes the colour from mould while leaving the growth in place on porous materials, so the patch looks treated and returns later. Household bleach is also mostly water, which means you are adding moisture to a material that already has a moisture problem. Neither product substitutes for physically removing the growth and then keeping the area dry.

Can you remove mould from plasterboard or grout with vinegar?
