Why Queensland homes are built for mould

The classic Queenslander is a beautiful piece of climate design. Raised off the ground on stumps, timber-framed, with high ceilings, wide verandahs and windows positioned to pull a breeze through. Every one of those features exists to move air and shed heat in a hot, humid place. The trade-off is that the same design gives moisture a lot of surfaces to settle on.

Timber is porous and it breathes with the weather. Subfloor space under a raised house traps still, damp air, especially where the ground underneath stays shaded and moist. Original single-skin walls (one layer of timber, no cavity) have very little insulation, so warm humid air hits a cool internal surface and condenses. Add decades of paint layers, sealed-up rooms and modern additions that do not ventilate the way the original house did, and you have a building that holds moisture longer than it releases it.

Call a specialist when the mould is:

  • Growing into porous materials: plasterboard, gyprock, carpet, soft furnishings, ceiling batts or timber that has gone soft. Once it is IN the material, wiping the surface does not remove it.
  • Spread across a large area rather than a contained patch. Bigger areas mean more spores disturbed during cleaning and a source that is clearly ongoing.
  • Behind walls, in the subfloor, or in the ceiling cavity, where you can smell it or see staining bleeding through but cannot reach the actual growth.
  • Linked to a structural or plumbing problem: a roof leak, rising damp, a burst pipe, or water that has been sitting.
  • Coming back quickly after cleaning, which tells you the moisture source is still active and needs to be fixed, not just wiped.

There is no pride lost in referring this out. Everyday habits that lower moisture

  • Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for a good while after every shower, and leave the door open afterwards so the moisture clears.
  • Open up the house when the weather allows and let the breeze do what the design intended, particularly after humid or rainy stretches.
  • Pull furniture a few centimetres off external walls so air can move behind it, and avoid packing wardrobes so tight that air cannot circulate.
  • Dry wet towels, bathmats and washing outside or in a ventilated space, not draped over a chair in a closed room.
  • Wipe down condensation on windows and cold surfaces in the morning rather than letting it sit.
  • Use a dehumidifier or the dry setting on your air-conditioner during long humid spells, especially in rooms that stay damp.
  • Keep an eye on the quiet spots: the linen cupboard, behind the bed, under-sink cabinets, and the corners that never see direct airflow.
