Eco-Friendly and Non-Toxic Cleaning Products: An Australian Guide

On an Australian cleaning label, "eco" and "natural" mean whatever the manufacturer wants them to mean. Here is what actually cleans, which categories are worth avoiding, and why the tools matter more than the bottle.

The short answer

  • "Eco", "natural", "green", "plant-based" and "non-toxic" have no legal definition on an Australian cleaning label, so any manufacturer can print any of them on any formulation.
  • Environmentally friendly and health-safe are 2 separate claims. A product can break down harmlessly in a waterway and still be a significant indoor trigger.
  • Fragrance is the first thing worth removing, and that includes essential oils. An essential oil is a concentrated plant fragrance, not a neutral ingredient.
  • Household cleaning runs on 4 mechanisms: surfactants, mild acids, mild alkalis and mechanical action. Almost everything else on the shelf is packaging, colour and scent.
  • Never combine bleach with ammonia, vinegar or any other acid. Those mixtures release toxic gases.

The eco cleaning aisle is one of the least regulated pieces of marketing in an Australian supermarket. I read labels for a living and I still find them frustrating, because the words that sound the most reassuring are the ones carrying the least obligation. Here is what those words actually mean, what they do not mean, and what I have settled on after cleaning homes for people who react to things.

The words on the front of the bottle are not regulated

No Australian law defines "natural" before a manufacturer is allowed to print it on a cleaning product. The same goes for "eco", "green", "gentle", "plant-based", "non-toxic" and "chemical-free". The ACCC does act on environmental claims that mislead consumers, and it has published guidance for businesses making them, but that is enforcement after the fact against the clearest offenders. It is not a standard a product has to pass before it reaches a shelf.

"Chemical-free" is the one that gives the game away fastest. Water is a chemical. Citric acid is a chemical. Everything in the bottle, and everything in your body, is a chemical. The phrase is not a claim about the formulation at all, it is a mood. When I see it on a label I take it as a signal that the marketing department had more input than the chemist.

There is a deeper problem underneath the vocabulary. Cosmetics sold in Australia carry mandatory ingredient labelling. Household cleaning products largely do not. Hazardous components have to be disclosed through a safety data sheet, which is a workplace document written for a workplace audience, not for the person standing in the cleaning aisle deciding between 2 sprays. So a cleaning bottle can legally tell you almost nothing about what is in it, and many do exactly that while covering the rest of the label in leaves.

Third-party certification is a step up from an unverified adjective, and I would rather see a real scheme's mark than not. Read what the scheme actually assesses, though. Some look at environmental impact across a product's life cycle. Some assess a single attribute such as biodegradability or packaging. Very few are certifying that a product will not set off somebody's airways, because that is not the question they were designed to answer. A logo answers the question its scheme asked, which may not be your question. It also helps to know the difference between an independent certification and a badge a brand designed for itself, and that distinction is covered properly in how greenwashing works in the cleaning aisle.

Environmentally friendly and health-safe are 2 different claims

These get printed on the same bottle and read as a single idea, and they are not one. An environmental claim is about what happens to a substance after it leaves your house: whether it breaks down, what it does in a waterway, how it was manufactured, what the container is made of. A health claim is about what happens while the product is in your house: what you breathe in a small bathroom with the door shut, what stays on the bench a toddler leans against, what your hands are in for 20 minutes.

A product can pass one test and fail the other, in both directions. Essential oils are plant-derived, renewable and biodegradable, and they are among the most common triggers I come across in homes. Bleach breaks down reasonably quickly once it is down the drain, and I still will not use it indoors. Conversely, some perfectly benign indoor ingredients have unimpressive environmental credentials. The 2 questions are genuinely separate, and answering one tells you very little about the other.

If you live with someone sensitive, the health question is the one you are actually asking, even when the marketing is answering the environmental one. That gap is worth sitting with, and I have written about it in more detail in why planet-safe and health-safe are not the same thing.

Fragrance is the first thing I remove

"Fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient list is not an ingredient. It is a category heading. It can represent a mixture of dozens of individual components, disclosed as a single word because fragrance formulations are treated as trade secrets. The one entry on the list you would most want detail about is the one entry structured to give you none.

There is also a difference between "unscented" and "fragrance-free" that costs people money. Unscented can mean a masking fragrance has been added to cover the smell of the raw ingredients, so the product has no noticeable scent and still contains fragrance materials. Fragrance-free should mean none were used. Neither term is policed, so where a full ingredient list exists, check the claim against it rather than trusting the front of the pack.

Then there are essential oils, which is where I lose a portion of the room. An essential oil is a concentrated, volatile plant extract. It is a fragrance. Natural is not a synonym for inert, and plenty of the most reactive substances on earth are plant-derived. I do not use them in any product, in any home, without exception. Not lavender for the linen, not tea tree in the bathroom, not lemon in the kitchen. A fragranced product does not stay in the room where it was used, either. It moves through the house, settles into soft furnishings, and lingers in carpet and bedding long after the surface has dried. That is the part people underestimate. You clean the bathroom on Saturday and the bedroom smells like it on Tuesday.

The categories we exclude, and why

I never name product brands, and that is deliberate rather than coy. Brands reformulate, get bought, change suppliers and quietly swap ingredients between one production run and the next. A standard survives all of that. A shopping list does not. What we refuse to bring into a client's home is the useful information, so here it is.

  • Synthetic fragrance and parfum, in every product, without exception.
  • Hormone-disrupting chemicals.
  • SLS, parabens and phthalates.
  • Antibacterial agents including triclosan, and anything else that disrupts the skin, gut or respiratory microbiome.
  • Bleach.
  • Dyes and added colours.
  • Essential oils, which are still a fragrance and still a common trigger.

A note on 2 of those, because they attract the most argument. Dyes are the easiest exclusion to justify: colour contributes nothing to the cleaning, it exists so the liquid looks like it is doing something, and it is one more thing left behind on a surface. Antibacterial agents are the harder conversation. Routine antibacterial cleaning in an ordinary home achieves very little that thorough plain cleaning does not, because removing the soil removes most of what was living in it. Meanwhile you are applying a biocide to the surfaces your household touches all day. There are genuine moments for targeted disinfection, such as after raw meat or during illness in the house, and those are moments rather than a default setting. What actually cleans

Take the marketing off and domestic cleaning runs on 4 mechanisms, supported by 2 multipliers: time and heat. Understanding the 4 is what lets you walk past most of the aisle without anxiety, because you can see which mechanism a product is selling you and whether you already own something that does it.

Surfactants

Soap and detergent. These are molecules with a water-loving end and an oil-loving end, so they lift greasy soil off a surface and hold it suspended in water where it can be wiped or rinsed away. Nearly everything sold as an all-purpose spray is a dilute surfactant with additives. The removal step is part of the mechanism, not an optional finish: a surfactant left sitting on the surface leaves a film, and that film attracts soil faster than the bare surface did. A good share of the "this product leaves streaks" complaints I hear are actually under-rinsing.

Mild acids

Acids dissolve mineral deposits, which is a specific job: limescale on tapware, hard-water marks on glass, and soap scum, which is largely a mineral and fatty residue rather than dirt. Citric acid is my workhorse for this, because it is effective, has no smell, and rinses clean. Vinegar does part of the same job more weakly and brings its own odour with it, which matters more than people expect in a fragrance-free home. Acids also need respect: they etch marble, limestone and other natural stone, they can damage some metals and coatings, and they should not be left on a surface indefinitely. Mild alkalis

Alkalis handle fats, oils and protein soils, which is why they belong in kitchens and on oven doors. Bicarb soda sits at the gentle end and brings a second useful property, mild abrasion, so it works on baked-on residue where a cloth alone slides. Washing soda is considerably stronger and wants gloves. Keep alkalis off aluminium and be careful on painted, waxed or lacquered finishes. How bicarb, castile soap and hydrogen peroxide actually behave goes through the practical limits of each one, including the things they are frequently claimed to do and do not.

Mechanical action

This is the mechanism left out of almost every natural cleaning post on the internet, and it does more of the work than the other 3 combined. The right brush for the surface. Microfibre in the right weave for the task. Steel wool where a surface can genuinely take it, which means never on glass cooktops, acrylic baths, chrome tapware, or anything with a coating you cannot afford to lose. Professional HEPA vacuums for dust, rather than a dry cloth that mostly relocates it into the air and back down again 20 minutes later.

Then the multipliers. Most people spray and wipe within about 5 seconds, which gives the product no chance to do the thing they bought it for. Leave the same spray for 3 minutes and it performs noticeably better. Warm water outperforms cold on grease by a wide margin. Neither costs anything, and between them they are worth more than upgrading the bottle.

Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same job

Cleaning removes soil, and takes most of the microbial load away with it, because microbes live in and on that soil. Disinfecting kills what remains on an already clean surface. Applying disinfectant to a dirty surface largely wastes it, since the soil shields what is underneath. Most surfaces in a normal home need the first job and not the second.

Registered disinfectant claims are regulated and have to be substantiated by testing, at a specified concentration and a specified contact time, usually far longer than the wipe people give it. A homemade mix in a spray bottle has not been through any of that, so I will not describe one as a disinfectant, and neither should anyone selling you a recipe. It can be a good cleaner. Safety, and this one is not negotiable. Never mix bleach with ammonia. Never mix bleach with vinegar or any other acid. Never mix it with any product whose ingredients you are not certain of. Those combinations release toxic gases, and "a bit of both to make it stronger" is how people end up in an emergency department. We do not use bleach at all. If you choose to use it, use it on its own, with the window open, and never in the same bucket, sink or cloth as anything else.

Reading a label without a chemistry degree

You do not need to memorise ingredient names. You need a short sequence you run every time, and after a few weeks it takes about 15 seconds per product.

  1. 1Turn the bottle around. The front is advertising, the back is information, and the gap between the 2 is often the most informative thing about the product.
  2. 2If there is no full ingredient list anywhere on the pack or the brand's website, treat that absence as the answer. Companies proud of a formulation tend to publish it.
  3. 3Scan specifically for "fragrance" and "parfum". Then check whether the pack says "unscented", which can still mean masking fragrance was added.
  4. 4Treat certification logos as answers to specific questions and look up which question. Independent scheme, or a badge the brand designed for itself?
  5. 5Ignore any claim that cannot fail. "Chemical-free", "gentle", "safe for the whole family" and "inspired by nature" carry no obligation and can be printed on anything.
  6. 6Check the dilution. A concentrate and a ready-to-use spray are not comparable on price or on strength, and concentrate is usually the better buy in both directions.

The kit I actually carry

It is short, and none of it is exotic. A neutral fragrance-free surfactant. Citric acid for mineral build-up and soap scum. Bicarb. Microfibre in a few different weaves, because the cloth for glass is not the cloth for a greasy splashback. Brushes across a range of stiffness, for grout, tap bases, window tracks and the join where the vanity meets the wall. Steel wool for the surfaces that can take it. Professional HEPA vacuums. Warm water. Time.

Nothing on that list is expensive. The expensive part is the labour, and that is not an accident of my pricing, it is the whole structure of the thing.

The bottle gets the credit. The brush does the work.

Why the tools and the time matter more than the bottle

A commodity clean is priced on speed. When a quote is built around getting a 3 bedroom house finished in 2 hours, a decision about chemistry has already been made, whether or not anyone says so out loud. Harsh chemistry is what you reach for when the clock has taken away the option of removing something physically. Strong solvent plus strong fragrance produces a room that smells finished, and smelling finished is not the same as being clean. Frequently the soil was dissolved, smeared thinner and perfumed.

We charge $85 per hour and price the time instead, which is what makes the product standard possible rather than aspirational. A reset deep clean on a 3 bedroom home runs 10 to 15 hours, usually 2 cleaners across a day. It is not a different list from a regular clean. It is the same list on a home that has not had it done yet, so every item takes longer. After that, weekly or fortnightly maintenance holds the standard, and maintenance is genuinely cheaper than repeatedly rescuing a house.

Higher detail work rotates across visits rather than happening every time: ceiling fans, light fittings, cornices, air-conditioning vents and filters, blinds, interior windows. Nothing accumulates unseen, and nobody pays fortnightly for work that is not due yet. When a home is well maintained and the standard list is done, we do not leave early. The remaining time goes into the places that never make it onto a list: under the kitchen sink, the shelf at the back of a cupboard, inside the fridge. How to switch without throwing everything out

The version of this that fails is the one where somebody empties the laundry cupboard into a bin bag on a Sunday, replaces the lot in a hurry, and finds the new products underwhelming because they were bought in a rush. Do it in this order instead.

  1. 1Stop the scented products first, and start with the ones that have no cleaning function at all: air fresheners, plug-ins, room sprays, fabric refreshers, laundry scent boosters. This is the largest single change available and it costs nothing, because you are subtracting rather than buying.
  2. 2Replace what you use most often, in the smallest and least ventilated rooms, first. Bathroom before garage. A daily shower spray matters more than the thing you use twice a year.
  3. 3Reduce the count rather than swapping one for one. Most homes need roughly 4 products, not 14, once you are buying by mechanism instead of by room.
  4. 4Spend the difference on tools. A good set of brushes and decent microfibre will outperform any upgrade in liquid.
  5. 5Give it a fortnight before you judge the result. A home that has had fragranced products in it for years initially reads as "not clean" when the scent goes, because clean has been trained to mean scented. That recalibration takes about 2 weeks.

What you probably do not need

The honest answer to a lot of shopping questions is no. You do not need air fresheners or plug-ins. You do not need antibacterial versions of everything. You do not need a separate purpose-built spray for glass, stovetops, stainless steel, timber, bathrooms and floors, since most of those are the same 2 mechanisms in 6 bottles with 6 price tags. You do not need laundry scent boosters. And you do not need the premium natural premix that costs several times the ingredients it contains, though I understand why people buy it and I am not going to be sniffy about convenience.

A useful test: if a product's main job is to make a room smell like it has been cleaned, it is a fragrance delivery device with a cleaning claim attached. That is a category, and it is the category worth leaving in the shop.

None of this requires you to become a purist. It requires knowing which 4 things do the cleaning, being sceptical of any word on a label that carries no obligation, and accepting that the effort you put in matters more than the money you spend. That is a less satisfying answer than a new bottle. It is also the one that works. Every product we use is fragrance-free, and that includes no essential oils, in any room, without exception.

Do natural cleaning products disinfect?

Cleaning and disinfecting are 2 different jobs. Thorough cleaning removes soil and takes most of the microbial load away with it, which is what the majority of household surfaces actually need. Disinfecting kills what remains on an already clean surface, and registered disinfectant claims have to be substantiated through testing at a set concentration and contact time. A premium natural premix often costs several times what its components would, which can be worth it for convenience but is not buying better performance. Money spent on good brushes, quality microfibre and a proper HEPA vacuum does more for the result than an upgrade in liquid, and so does simply leaving a product on the surface for 3 minutes instead of wiping it off immediately.
