The short answer

- Harsh chemistry is the usual substitute for time. A strong product hides in one pass what brushwork and physical effort actually remove.
- Bleach is a time-saving decision dressed up as a cleaning decision: it removes colour, leaves growth behind on porous surfaces, and adds moisture.
- Ask about insurance, and ask how many hours the quote allows. Time in the home and care over the outcome matter more than the number on the quote.

A cheap cleaning quote is usually an accurate description of a shorter visit. Most quotes never tell you how many hours you are buying, so 2 numbers that look comparable can describe completely different pieces of work.
Where a low hourly rate actually goes
An hourly rate covers wages, superannuation, insurance, equipment and the replacement of it when it wears out, travel between jobs, consumables, and the unbilled hours of quoting, scheduling and bookkeeping. That list is the same for every cleaning business in Brisbane, whatever it charges.
When a rate is very low, one of those lines is being squeezed. Usually it is hours. A 3 bedroom home gets 2 hours instead of 4, while the list of jobs stays the same length. Sometimes it is insurance, which stays invisible right up until the day it matters. Sometimes it is the person doing the work, paid badly enough that they do not stay.

Compare the hours first, then the price makes sense.
What to compare instead
- Hours allocated. Ask how many hours the quote assumes for your specific home, then compare like with like.
- Written inclusions, plus what rotates across visits. A list that promises ceiling fans every single visit is padding either the list or the price.
- Insurance, confirmed in writing before the first booking.
- How the work is resourced. Cleaners given enough time, and paid properly for it, can afford to care about the outcome, and that shows in the finish.
- Products, specifically. A cleaner who can tell you what they refuse to use has thought about it. Fragrance-free and eco-friendly are not the same claim.
- The fix. What happens when something is missed, how long you have to raise it, and whether the return visit is charged.

Where the missing hours show up
A commodity clean is priced on speed, so harsh chemistry does the work that time would otherwise do.
Take a shower screen with mineral build-up and soap scum. Done properly, that is citric acid, the right brush, dwell time and physical effort. It takes as long as it takes. Done fast, it is a strong product sprayed on, wiped, and gone, with whatever remains hidden under a smell that reads as clean.
Bleach is the clearest example. Bleach removes colour. On a porous surface it can take the stain out and leave the growth behind, and it adds moisture while it does it. The bathroom looks resolved while the growth is still there. That is a time-saving decision dressed up as a cleaning decision.
Never combine bleach with ammonia, vinegar or any acidic cleaner, and never mix cleaning products together to make them stronger. Bleach with ammonia releases chloramine gas, and bleach with an acid releases chlorine gas. Both are dangerous in an enclosed bathroom or laundry. Use one product at a time, exactly as its label directs, and ventilate the room.

Fragrance is the cheapest tool in the cupboard
Scent is the fastest way to signal a result. It costs almost nothing to add and it changes how a room is perceived in under a second, which is why it is in nearly everything on the supermarket shelf.
We do not use it. Every product we bring is fragrance-free, and beyond that we exclude synthetic fragrance and parfum without exception, hormone-disrupting chemicals, SLS, parabens and phthalates, antibacterial agents including triclosan and anything else that disrupts the skin, gut or respiratory microbiome, bleach, and dyes and added colours. We also avoid essential oils as a rule, because an essential oil is still a fragrance and still a common trigger. That last one surprises people who assumed natural meant neutral.
Emptying the cupboard of all of that is a real constraint. The result has to come from method, and method takes time. Which brings the conversation back to price, every single time.

Insurance, and who is actually in your house
Ask any cleaner for evidence of insurance before you ask them for a price. It is a short question and the answer is revealing. Someone working uninsured in your home is a risk you are carrying without having been told you are carrying it.
Then ask how the work is resourced. A cleaner who has enough time in your home, and who is paid properly for that time, can afford to care about the outcome: the tap marks in the spare bathroom if it is left wet, the window that sticks, the ensuite that matters more to you than the guest room. That care is most of what you are buying, and it needs hours to happen in.
What a reset clean changes
Build-up collects in the places a rushed visit never reaches: grout, the tops of door frames, skirting boards, window tracks, cupboard fronts, the edges of the shower base. A short clean covers the middle of every surface and leaves the edges, and 6 months later the edges are worse.
A reset changes the baseline. For a 3 bedroom home ours is 20 hours at $85 per hour, usually shared between 2 cleaners. That sounds like a lot of time, and it is how long the work takes to do well. It is the same list as a regular clean, on a home that has not had it done yet, so every item on it takes longer. Regular maintenance cleaning on its own keeps a home properly clean, and starting with a reset simply makes every visit after it easier and shorter. What the time gets spent on once a home is on top of itself
A fair question at $85 per hour is what happens when the house is genuinely under control and the standard list stops filling the booking. We do not leave early.
Higher detail work rotates across visits: ceiling fans, light fittings, cornices, air-conditioning vents and filters, blinds, interior windows. Rotating it means nothing accumulates unseen, and nobody pays fortnightly for work that is not due. When the rotation is up to date and there is time left, it goes on the extras that never make anyone's list: under the kitchen sink, the shelf at the back of a cupboard, inside the fridge.

The dearest quote is not automatically the best
Spending more guarantees nothing on its own. A high rate can be buying brand, a franchise fee, a slick booking system, or a subcontracted crew. Some premium quotes are premium because the work is genuinely deeper. Some because the marketing is.
Price on its own is a weak signal. What it does tell you is how much time the business can afford to leave in your home, which only helps once you know how they intend to spend it.
When a cheap clean is genuinely the right call
Budget cleaning has a real use. If you need a tidy, presentable house before visitors arrive on Saturday, a fast surface clean does exactly that. If money is tight and the choice is a short clean or none at all, take the short clean.
The maths changes when you are hiring someone to get fragrance out of the home, or to deal with dust, damp, mould, or years of accumulated build-up that a 2 hour visit will never touch. In that situation a cheap clean is not a smaller version of the right clean. It is a different service that happens to share a name.
Work out which of those 2 situations you are in before you compare a single price. That decision does more for your budget than any amount of quote-shopping.

Why do you charge $85 per hour when other cleaners charge much less?
The rate covers the time the method actually needs. We work with professional HEPA vacuums, the right brush and the right natural product for each surface, and physical effort, all of it without fragrance, bleach or harsh chemistry. That takes longer than spraying a strong product and wiping it off. A lower rate usually means fewer hours in your home, and the shortfall gets covered with chemistry instead of technique.
Is a cheap cleaning service ever the better choice?
Yes, for some jobs. If you want a tidy, presentable home before guests arrive and the underlying condition of the house is fine, a fast surface clean does that job and costs less. It stops being the better choice when you are hiring someone to get fragrance out of the home, or to deal with dust, damp, mould or years of build-up in grout, tracks and edges, because a short visit will not reach any of that.
