The short answer
- The skipped spots share a pattern: still air, above eye line, or hidden behind something heavy. Dust lands there and nothing moves it along, so it builds for months.
- 3 of the 10 are broadcasters. Ceiling fans, air-conditioning vents and the space under a bed all push their stored dust back into the room the moment they are disturbed.
- Skirting boards, door frames and the tops of doors are horizontal ledges that people read as vertical surfaces, which is exactly why they get walked past.
- None of the 10 needs a fragranced spray, an antibacterial agent or bleach. A HEPA vacuum, the right brush, citric acid for mineral build-up and physical effort will do all of it.
- Doing all 10 at every visit is poor value. Rotate them so each comes up before it becomes a problem, and nothing accumulates unseen.
Most cleaning is good at the flat surfaces between knee and shoulder height, because that is where mess is visible and where a visitor's eye lands. The 10 places below sit outside that band. They are not obscure. Every one of them is in a normal Brisbane house, and I can usually predict what I will find in each before I open the door.
What the 10 have in common
Dust needs 2 things to build up: somewhere to land, and nothing to move it along. Every spot on this list gives it both.
Some are simply reservoirs. Dust arrives, sits, and stays until someone deliberately removes it. Under a bed is the clearest example. Others are broadcasters, which is the category worth caring about most. A ceiling fan or an air-conditioning vent stores dust while it is idle, then throws it into the middle of the room the moment it runs. The dust does not stay where it was. It ends up in the air, on the bed, and on the floor you mopped yesterday.
That distinction is why I do not treat this as a list of nice-to-haves. If you are building a room-by-room cleaning schedule, the broadcasters belong in it on a fixed rotation, not on a someday list.
Nobody misses these because they are lazy. They miss them because a clean priced on speed cannot afford the minutes it takes to look up.
1. Skirting boards, door frames and the tops of doors
Air moves along the floor and pushes fine dust towards the edges of a room, which is why the base of a wall loads up faster than the middle of the floor. Skirting boards then hold it, because the top edge is a ledge, not a wall.
Door frames are the same trick played higher up. The top of the frame is a shelf about 2 metres off the ground that nobody has looked at since they moved in, and the top edge of the door is another. Both sit directly in the airflow of a door swinging, so they do not just store dust, they release it.
Use a damp microfibre cloth, not a dry duster. Dry dusting a skirting board relocates the problem to the floor.
2. Light switches, handles and high-touch points
Different problem here. This is transfer, not settling: skin oils, hand cream, food, and whatever was on the last set of fingers that touched the plate. Light switch surrounds in a kitchen go faintly tacky, and once they are tacky they hold dust as well.
I clean these with a damp cloth and physical effort, and that is deliberate. I do not use antibacterial agents, including triclosan, on any surface in a home. Disrupting the skin, gut and respiratory microbiome for the sake of a doorhandle is not a trade I am willing to make, and a properly wiped switch plate is clean without it.
3. Under and behind the bed
The largest dust reservoir in most houses, and the worst placed. The air under there is still and undisturbed for months, collecting skin cells, textile fibres from bedding, hair, and whatever comes off shoes at the doorway. Then somebody sits down on the mattress and the whole lot gets a gentle push back into the air of a room where someone spends around 8 hours a night.
A broom makes this worse. A professional HEPA vacuum, run slowly, is the only version of this job that removes the dust rather than redistributing it. I have written more about the corners standard cleans skip if you want the full argument.
4. Behind and under the couch
Same still air as under a bed, with food added. Crumbs migrate down the back of the cushions and out the bottom, and in a humid climate crumbs are not a neutral thing to leave sitting in the dark.
A couch is also a pump. Every time somebody drops into it, air is forced out through the upholstery, carrying whatever the cushions have collected. Vacuum under the cushions, along the seams, then move the whole thing forward and do the floor behind it. Every 6 months is usually enough for the full move, more often with pets in the house.
5. The tops of wardrobes and the fridge
Anything above eye line is invisible to almost everyone under 180cm, which is how a wardrobe top ends up with a felted grey mat on it. That mat gets lifted every time the doors swing.
The top of a fridge is worse, because kitchen grease is airborne and lands up there with the dust. What you get is a sticky film that a dry cloth slides straight over. It wants warm water, a proper cloth and pressure, and on stubborn build-up I use citric acid rather than reaching for anything harsher. Do not stand on a chair with wheels to reach it.
6. Ceiling fan blades
The purest broadcaster in the house. Dust loads along the leading edge of each blade in a neat grey stripe, sits there through winter while the fan is off, then gets flung across the whole room the first warm week of spring. Nothing else in a house redistributes that much settled dust that quickly.
Clean the blades with a damp cloth, holding another cloth underneath to catch what comes loose. Never dry-dust a fan blade over a made bed. If the fan sits above a bed, strip it first, or do the fan on the same day you change the sheets.
7. Air-conditioning vents and filters
The same principle with a motor behind it. A split system filter is designed to catch dust and it does, until it is loaded, at which point airflow drops and the unit works harder for less. Return air grilles are worth a look too, because they pull room air onto themselves all day and the face of the grille shows it.
Rinse washable filters during the cooling season and let them dry fully before they go back in, because a damp filter sitting in a dark housing in Brisbane is a genuinely bad idea. Check the manual first. Not every filter is washable, and some units need a technician rather than a homeowner.
8. Window tracks and sills
Grit, dead insects, paint flakes and lint collect in the track, then condensation runs down the glass and wets the lot. Organic debris plus water plus a warm room is the standard starting point for mould, and mould can begin growing in around 48 hours when the conditions suit it. Healthy indoor relative humidity sits at roughly 40 to 65 percent, and the inside of a closed window track will often be well above that on a winter morning.
Vacuum the track dry first with a crevice tool, then wipe it out. If you are seeing water there regularly, the track is a symptom rather than the cause, and it is worth understanding what condensation on the glass is telling you.
9. The gap beside the fridge and under the kitchen kickboards
Narrow, dark, warm from the fridge motor, and directly under the part of the house where food gets dropped. That combination attracts pests, which is a better reason to clean it than appearance.
The kickboard gap runs the same story along the whole length of the kitchen. A crevice tool on a vacuum reaches most of it. If the fridge is on rollers and the floor can take it, slide it out, do the side panel and the floor properly, then check the coils at the back are not furred with dust. If it is not on rollers, leave it, or wait for a clean where 2 people can lift it safely.
10. The underside of the shower screen frame
My favourite one to point out, because the reaction is always the same. The bottom rail of a shower screen has a lip on its underside that holds water after every shower. Soap, minerals from the water and body oils build into a hard scaly layer there, and because you look down at it from above you never see the surface it is forming on.
Citric acid handles the mineral component. Give it time to work, then use a brush and pressure, and steel wool only on surfaces that can take it. A safety line that applies to every product in your laundry cupboard: never combine bleach with an acid, with vinegar, or with ammonia, in any quantity, because those combinations release toxic gas. I do not use bleach at all, which removes the risk entirely.
Rotate them, do not do all 10 every fortnight
Trying to hit every item at every clean is the fastest way to abandon the list, and it is poor value. A ceiling fan that has not been switched on since April does not need attention every 2 weeks.
In our own work the higher detail items rotate across visits: ceiling fans, light fittings, cornices, air-conditioning vents and filters, blinds and interior windows come up on a schedule rather than every time. Nothing accumulates unseen, and nobody pays fortnightly for work that is not due. Once a home is genuinely well maintained we do not finish early either. The remaining time goes on the next layer down: under the kitchen sink, the shelf at the back of a cupboard, inside the fridge.
If none of the 10 has been touched in years, that is not a maintenance visit. That is a reset deep clean, which for a 3 bedroom home runs 10 to 15 hours, usually 2 cleaners across a day. It is not a different list of tasks. It is the same list on a house that has not had it done yet, so everything simply takes longer.
What you actually need to do all of this
Less than the cleaning aisle suggests. A vacuum with a real HEPA filter and a crevice tool, a few microfibre cloths, the right brush for each surface, citric acid for mineral build-up and soap scum, steel wool where a surface can take it, and a stable step. That is the kit.
No fragranced spray would have made any of these jobs easier, and a fan blade does not care what your cleaner smells like. Every product we use is fragrance-free, with no synthetic fragrance or parfum, no hormone-disrupting chemicals, no SLS, parabens or phthalates, no antibacterial agents, no bleach, no dyes or added colours, and no essential oils, because an essential oil is still a fragrance and still a common trigger. The reason that works is the method. Tools and effort replace harsh chemistry. A commodity clean is priced on speed, so the chemistry has to compensate for the minutes nobody paid for. We price the time instead, at $85 per hour, which buys the minutes it takes to do the top of a door frame properly.
